UK politics has begun to mirror its sibling the States, fortunately, not to the same extent. Of course, Political pandering is what you get in a democracy where pretty much everyone who can walk in the polling place can cast a vote. Most humans are incapable of reason. You also have to remember that the war on drugs is big business. Funny, but the Economist has been suggesting the decriminalisation of drugs for ages.

Privatized prisons + lobbyists for privatized prisons paying off politicians to enact stricter laws in order to create more criminals + keeping drugs illegal > than legalizing drugs to reduce violent crime and making money off of any kind of pot tax. I'm sure that's how it really works. I don't agree with it, but I can see that being the real deal, or something like it anyway.
