Senate Republicans held together Monday afternoon to block efforts by Democrats to officially begin debate on the financial industry reform bill.
No Republicans cast a “yes” vote on the procedural motion, keeping Democrats from the 60 vote threshold needed to move forward. One Democrat, Nebraska’s Ben Nelson, voted “no” outright.
[...]
Among the bill’s provisions are the creation of a system for dismantling struggling large firms, the establishment of a consumer protection agency, and a requirement that derivatives be traded openly. The House has already passed its version of the legislation.
[...]
One difference between the two sides is over a proposed Consumer Protection Agency, which Democrats say will keep Americans from being taken advantage of by predatory lenders. Republicans fear the agency could be costly and add an unnecessary and harmful layer of regulation (emphasis mine).
Could someone please give me an example of unnecessary and harmful regulation of Wall Street? Because I’m drawing a blank here. I mean, the reason why our economy went balls up was because of a lack of regulation; which gave way to the rampant fraud on Wall Street.
But then again, what the fuck do I know? I’m not a white-collar criminologist and former financial regulator. But William K. Black is. And he agrees with me:
Control fraud epidemics can arise when financial deregulation and desupervision and perverse compensation systems create a “criminogenic environment”.
Goddammit, I love it when I’m right.

OHHH!!! says:
The reason why our economy went balls up was because of Govt forcing banks to secure loans to people who could never pay them back. It all rolls downhill from there.
You seem to forget that our “lack of regulation” is the reason our free markets have soared and created the most wealthy and gainfully employed citizens in the entire world. even now, in our “recession” we live the good life. You libs still are able to spend money on your fashionable square glasses so you can look cool sipping your starbucks coffee and talking about saving the world to your friends who can give a shit about what you have to say but nod their heads in agreement while pondering how the fuck you even got your GED, let alone afford those square glasses…
The last thing we need is our liberal government forcing halfass rules on our freemarkets like they did to our healthcare. And until there is some semblance of agreement from the majority of Americans, dems can go fuck themselves. We’re sick of their bullshit and they’re time is over as should be apparent, and no amount of liberal propaganda is going to deter people from voting them the fuck out of office as soon as possible.

Wrong. Here’s why our economy went balls up:
OHHH!!! says:
lol ya Al Jezerra Network sure proved this recession was caused by one company. Wow phuck, stuff like linking some article from AL JEZERRA and making a statement that Goldman is the reason for the recession is laughable at best.
Dude you don’t seem like a dummy, yet you can’t just go and google “What started the recession” or “recession timeline” or some similar term to find the BILLIONS of articles that prove how it all happened? History isn’t difficult to decipher when it’s readily available to those who aren’t fooling themselves.

If you only had the ability to see the world outside of your ridiculously outdated stereotypes OHHH. Those of us who you call “libs” would never be caught dead in a Starbucks. While yes, those partially responsible for the financial crisis and the next one to come, the ones who sold out to Big Finance after losing their Big Labor voting base as the industrial soul of America had been ripped out by reagonomics would be there. I know it might be surprising to you, but there are very few Democrats today who I would classify as what you believe a liberal is.
Oh, and Al Jazeera is a far less biased news source than I’m sure your TV has ever been tuned to. I’m afraid you’ve been brainwashed into believing that the free market is perfect and people left to their own devices behave in a rational way. Dude, open a window, get some fresh air.
OHHH!!! says:
Oh Starbucks isn’t still “in” with the libs in Poland? I’m not surprised the square glasses has kept “in” for so long, but I was certain Starbucks was still a sign that you know what the fuck is going on if you sip coffee there…
And people who don’t behave in a rational way get dealt with by people who do. We have a liberal government right now behaving in an extremely irrational way, and you can bet they’ll be dealt with.
Big government means the citizens are forced to pay for whatever they want you to pay for. Everything outside of government (including your “BIG Finance and “BIG Labor”) lives or dies by it’s “rationalizing” and individuals are never forced to pay for or benefit from their successes and failures unless by choice.
Reagan had it right in so many ways, I doubt you were even alive when he was president which would account for your very blankety blanket statement. It’s you who are brainwashed, when you grow up you’ll realize your error.
And I don’t watch TV unless its a movie. Commercials piss me off and waste my time — and there’s no one who interests me enough to make me want to sit and stare for even 10 minutes.

nahummer says:
Corporatist isn’t liberal OHHH, it’s too bad you’re so blinded by your prejudice and hate to see that. I have a feeling we could agree on some things, such as the need to replace most of your congress. If by Reagan you mean his handlers such as Merrill Lynch’s Regan, I remember that they took your government and turned it into a mortgage backed security, what, something like $3 trillion in debt. That was the true beginning of your downfall, owned lock, stock and barrel by the banks.
And yes, they did get Starbucks here a little while ago which means I’ll have to move again soon.

Starbucks should change their name to Starfucks.Cat’s piss tastes better than the insipid shit they sell.

It’s common knowledge by anyone who does even a little bit of research that Obama is a Marxist loving Socialist by his own words – it’s who he chooses as his closest friends and carefully chose Marxist professors.
And honestly, I care less about stamps of identification, his own words and actions speak louder than his past.
Hatred is a very strong word and an emotion I’ve reserved only for child murderers and rapists, and a few other worthless criminals. There’s some actions I hate too like the forcing of healthcare and the ridiculous spin on both sides to win votes. However the individuals behind it are simply doing what most individuals do – look out for Numba 1, and I can’t hate them for that. But I will vote them out when they get stupid with it.
Politics has got out of hand and is way more important to “reform” than any public sector undertakings…

My bad. I forgot I could only use links from Fox News, Washington Post, Wall Street Journal, Politico, and World Net Daily.
And of course Goldman isn’t the main reason behind the recession. AIG, WaMu, Lehman Brothers, Bank of America, Citigroup and JPMorgan deserve some credit.
Reagan had it right in so many ways
Your right. Reagan knew how to increase government spending, grow the federal government, sell arms to Iran, and commit state-sponsored terrorism in South America.
It’s common knowledge by anyone who does even a little bit of research that Obama is a Marxist loving Socialist by his own words
Source? Because I’d love to see where Obama called himself a Marxist loving Socialist.
@nahummer – Oh, and Al Jazeera is a far less biased news source than I’m sure your TV has ever been tuned to.
I fucking love Al Jazeera English. It’s one of the first places I visit when I get online.
@rory – Starbucks should change their name to Starfucks.Cat’s piss tastes better than the insipid shit they sell.
Yeah, I’d rather drink a tall glass of my cat’s piss than a cup of their burnt coffee.
